Our History
Colorado State University Student Legal Services is proud to be one of the oldest SLS offices in the country! We were created as a service of student government in 1971 to provide advice to CSU students on a broad range of issues. In 1978, a student referendum made the office independent of student government and funded by general student fees. We’ve been funded that way ever since, allowing us to provide most of our services free of charge to students. Over four decades and tens of thousands of students helped, we are going as strong as ever!
Confidentiality (Attorney-Client Privilege)
Information shared between attorney and client, in seeking legal advice, is protected by the attorney-client privilege and is confidential. You, the client, hold this privilege. The attorney is not permitted to share your information with any other individual or entity without your informed consent.
When you choose to allow a third party (another individual) to join your appointment in Student Legal Services and/or share what was discussed with others following the appointment, the attorney-client privilege may be waived. Student Legal Services strongly discourages you from allowing a third party to join your appointment or to share the contents of the appointment with others following the appointment.
Conflict of Interest Policy
Occasionally, SLS is restricted from helping a student due to a conflict of interest. When appropriate, SLS may refer the student to community attorneys who have agreed to provide a consultation for a reduced fee that is paid by SLS. Criminal defense attorneys in Fort Collins tend to offer initial consultations at no charge, so SLS does not make paid referrals in criminal cases. SLS does not provide legal services for housing cases to landlords, even if they are eligible students.
